Thermador Oven Not Heating or Not Holding Temperature? Causes, Costs and Fixes

A Thermador wall oven that will not heat, takes forever to preheat, or browns everything on one side is one of the more common calls we run in Southlake, Highland Park and Westlake kitchens. These are appliances, and the failure is almost never the whole oven — it is one of four or five parts, and which one it is can usually be narrowed down from the symptom before anyone opens a panel.
Match your symptom to the likely cause
No heat at all, display works. Bake element, igniter (on gas), relay board, or a tripped thermal cut-out.
Heats but never reaches temperature. Temperature sensor, a weak element, or a door that no longer seals.
Preheats far slower than it used to. A partially failed element, or a sensor reading high.
Uneven browning, one side dark. Convection fan or its motor, or an element failing at one end.
Dead display, no response. Power supply, control board, or a house breaker.
Error code on the display. Write it down before you cut the power — it names the circuit that faulted.
The four failures behind most no-heat calls
1. A failed bake or broil element (electric)
Elements fail two ways: dramatically, with a visible break, blister or scorch mark, or quietly, opening up when hot so the oven heats and then stops. The visible kind you can often confirm yourself — with the oven cold and powered off, look along the element for a break or a swollen spot. The quiet kind needs a meter, because a broken element can look perfectly normal. A classic tell: the oven preheats fine but drifts down during a long bake.
2. The temperature sensor
Thermador ovens run off a resistance probe in the cavity. As it drifts, the control receives a temperature that is not the real one — so the oven sits 40°F low, or overshoots, or never reaches setpoint at all while insisting it has. If your baking has gone wrong gradually rather than suddenly, and an oven thermometer disagrees with the display, this is the first suspect. It is also one of the less expensive parts on the list, which is why it is worth diagnosing properly rather than replacing a control board on a guess.
3. Igniter, on gas ovens
Gas ovens do not use a spark to hold the flame — a hot-surface igniter has to draw enough current to open the safety valve. As igniters age they still glow but stop drawing enough, so you get the familiar pattern: the igniter glows for several minutes, the burner never lights, and eventually the oven gives up. A glowing igniter is not a working igniter, and this fault is very commonly misread as a gas supply problem.
4. Relay board or control board
The relays that switch the elements live on a board, and a failed relay produces a dead bake element with a perfectly healthy element installed. This is the fault most often misdiagnosed in both directions — a board replaced when an element was open, or an element replaced when the relay never closed. It is also the reason a diagnosis that costs saves considerably more than that on the parts bill.
What to check before you call
Confirm the oven is not in Sabbath mode, demo mode, or a delayed-start or lockout state — every one of those produces a “broken” oven that is working exactly as told. Check the breaker: a double-pole breaker can trip one leg, leaving the display alive and the elements dead, which looks like a control failure and is not. Put an independent oven thermometer on the middle rack and compare it to the display after a full preheat plus fifteen minutes. And check the door seal — a hardened or torn gasket, or a hinge that no longer pulls the door tight, will keep an otherwise healthy oven from ever holding temperature.
One thing worth ruling out first on any oven that stopped right after a self-clean: self-clean cycles run the cavity extremely hot and are a well-known way to take out a thermal fuse, an element or a control board. If the oven died during or just after cleaning, say so when you call — it points the diagnosis straight at the parts that cycle punishes.
What repairs run on a Thermador

Worth repairing?
On built-in cooking equipment, almost always yes. A built-in wall oven is not a freestanding range you swap in an afternoon — replacement means matching a cutout, and on an older cabinet run that frequently means cabinetry work on top of the appliance. An element, sensor or igniter repair on a fifteen-year-old Thermador is routine and sensible. Where the calculation shifts is a discontinued control board on a very old unit, and we tell you that before you spend money chasing a part that is no longer made.
