Evap Pow'r-C Coil Cleaner: The Near-Neutral, Fragrance-Free Cleaner for Occupied Homes in DFW
Evap Pow'r-C is Nu-Calgon's low-foam, no-rinse, fragrance-free evaporator coil cleaner, and it is the closest to neutral on the whole chart. We use it on indoor coils in homes and kitchens where people are present during service and where scent or strong chemistry is a problem. If anyone in your house is sensitive to fragrances, or your business cannot smell like cleaner during open hours, this is the one to ask for.
What Evap Pow'r-C is
Evap Pow'r-C is a mild alkaline cleaner made for the indoor evaporator coil. At working strength it sits barely on the alkaline side of plain water. Three features set it apart from the rest of the evaporator line: low foam, no rinse, and fragrance free. It is biodegradable and NSF Registered.
That last one matters more than it sounds. Many coil cleaners are perfumed to mask a chemical odor, and the perfume ends up in the supply air for a day or two. Evap Pow'r-C has no fragrance because there is not much to mask.
What equipment we use it on (and what we don't)
The chart lists Evap Pow'r-C for evaporator coils and marks it microchannel safe. In practice that means:
- The indoor coil in a residential air handler, especially in bedrooms-over-the-attic layouts where the supply air goes straight into sleeping areas.
- Evaporators in Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, JennAir and True refrigeration, where the coil is inches from stored food and a strong smell would be unwelcome.
- Walk-in cooler and freezer evaporators as part of maintenance cleaning.
- Reach-ins and prep tables in restaurants that stay open while we work.
We do not use Evap Pow'r-C on outdoor condensers. Condensers collect grease and pollen that need a rinse-off alkaline with real foam. We also do not rely on it when a coil shows visible biological growth. The chart lists it as a cleaner for "soil, dirt deposits", not a disinfectant. For coils with mold or slime, we bring in Evap-Fresh No Rinse for the kill step.
Why this chemistry for this job
There are three levers on an evaporator coil cleaner: pH, foam and rinse.
pH decides how aggressive the cleaner is on soil and on the metal. Indoor coils are usually not greasy, so they do not need the firepower of an outdoor brightener. A near-neutral cleaner loosens dust and film without stressing aluminum fins or copper tubing, and without leaving an alkaline residue in the air stream. Evap Pow'r-C is the gentlest in the Nu-Calgon lineup.
Foam is a trade-off. On an outdoor condenser, thick foam pushes dirt out of a deep coil and you rinse it away. Inside an air handler, heavy foam can expand into the blower compartment, hold moisture in the coil pack and take a long time to drain. Low foam stays where we put it and clears out through the condensate pan.
Rinse is the indoor constraint. There is no hose in an attic and no drain under a Sub-Zero. A no-rinse cleaner is applied, allowed to work for the dwell time on the chart, then carried off by condensate when the system runs. That only works if the chemistry is mild enough to be left on the coil, which brings us back to pH.
Fragrance free is the reason this product exists alongside Evap-Green. Both are mild no-rinse cleaners. Evap-Green carries the EPA Safer Choice label and is rated safe around plants and animals. Evap Pow'r-C is lower pH, low foam and unscented. For a household with fragrance sensitivity, or a kitchen where any smell during service is a complaint, Evap Pow'r-C wins.
Hard water tolerance is "very good" on the chart, fine for the small batches we mix from DFW tap.
Even mild concentrates require gloves and eye protection. Our techs follow the chart's dilution and dwell times, and we do not give out DIY procedures beyond what it prints.
What you'll notice after the cleaning
The first thing is airflow. Dust on the evaporator fins narrows the gaps air moves through and insulates the coil. After cleaning, registers push harder and the system reaches setpoint faster, which usually means shorter run times through a Texas August.
The second is the absence of smell. Not a fresh scent, just nothing. The musty note on startup is gone, with no cleaner perfume in its place. For customers who chose this product because of sensitivity, that is the result they are paying for.
In refrigeration, a clean evaporator pulls the box down faster and the compressor rests more. On a built-in running constantly or frosting over, a fouled evaporator is one of the first things we look at.
Cleaning is step one of the Nu-Calgon Clean Coil Program. Because Evap Pow'r-C drains through the condensate pan, we pair it with step four, a pan treatment such as Pan-Treat or Gel Tabs, so the pan and drain line stay clear. Where there is biological growth, step three, Bio-Fresh cd, handles control on the coil and ductwork.
When to have this done in DFW
Spring is the target for the air handler coil, before it goes wet for the season. Cedar season in January and February and oak season in March and April both load the filter and the coil; an early-spring cleaning resets both before the humidity arrives.
Homes with someone who reacts to fragrances often put this off because a previous service visit left the house smelling like chemicals for a day. Evap Pow'r-C is our answer to that objection, and the reason we can schedule these cleanings during the day while the family is home.
Restaurants: once a year for the dining room split systems, twice for reach-ins and prep tables near the cook line, and walk-in evaporators on a maintenance interval rather than when product starts warming.

Coil Cleaning Questions
Is Evap Pow'r-C really fragrance free?
Yes. The chart lists fragrance free as one of its features, and its near-neutral pH means there is little chemical odor to cover up in the first place.
Why does low foam matter on an indoor coil?
Heavy foam can spread into the blower compartment and hold moisture in the coil. Low foam stays on the coil and drains out through the condensate pan.
Does it need to be rinsed?
No. It is a no-rinse product with a 5–15 minute dwell time. Condensate carries it out when the system runs.
Does Evap Pow'r-C kill mold?
No. It cleans soil and dirt deposits. For a coil with visible growth we add a disinfectant step with Evap-Fresh No Rinse or a control step with Bio-Fresh cd.
Evap Pow'r-C or Evap-Green for my house?
Both are mild no-rinse evaporator cleaners. Choose Evap-Green for the EPA Safer Choice label; choose Evap Pow'r-C for the lowest pH and no fragrance.
What customers say
Showed up on time. Resolved the issue quickly. Also he was a nice person. Would recommend them again
The technician was great! They came 2.5 hours after calling. I will definitely be calling them again!
Very professional, quick, clean and all of the other good stuff you would want in a repair. Price was good as well.
The gentlest thing that still works
Indoor coils are rarely greasy, so they rarely need firepower. If your business cannot smell like cleaner during open hours, that constraint decides the product for us.
Coil cleaning is maintenance, so it is usually cheapest as a plan rather than a call-out: our preventive-maintenance contracts start at $349 per year per location and cover scheduled coil cleaning, drain checks and the readings that catch a failing part before it strands you. One-off visits are fine too — call and we will tell you which makes sense for what you have.
Not sure what your coil needs?
Is anyone sensitive to fragrance, or is the space open to customers? We will tell you what it usually means before anyone drives out.
