What Goes Wrong on a JennAir
Before you call anyone, notice exactly when the symptom happens. On built-in refrigeration the timing tells us more than the symptom itself, and it often changes the price of the repair.
🔊 Noise That Stops at the Door
Open the door. If the sound stops, it is the evaporator fan, because the door switch cuts power to it. If it carries on, we are looking at the condenser fan or the compressor. Thirty seconds of your attention here can be the difference between a few hundred dollars and a sealed system job.
🌑 Obsidian Interior Gone Dark
JennAir builds the dark interior around its lighting, so a failed LED strip or driver leaves you genuinely unable to see what is in there. Nothing about the cooling is affected, which is why it gets postponed, but it is normally a simple part and worth adding to any other visit.
🌡️ Temperature Will Not Settle
Too cold one day, too warm the next, with nobody touching the setting. That is a sensor and damper problem, not a cooling problem. A unit that cannot read itself accurately overshoots and then overcorrects, and the compressor pays for it in run hours.
🧊 Ice Maker Slowing or Stopped
Hollow cubes, half-full bins, then nothing. The assembly is independent of the refrigeration side, so it fails on its own schedule. Fill valve, module, or a fill tube frozen shut, and the stage it stopped at tells us which.
❄️ Frost in the Freezer Drawer
On bottom-freezer and column units, frost creeping across the drawer means the defrost circuit is not clearing as it should. Left alone the ice sheet blocks airflow, and the fresh food side starts warming for what looks like an unrelated reason.
🚪 Panel Door Out of Line
Custom panels add real weight, and the hinge eventually settles under it. First you notice the door sitting proud against the cabinetry, then condensation along the seal, then a temperature the unit cannot hold. Catching it at the alignment stage is the cheap version.
JennAir Refrigeration We Work On
The model number is on a plate inside the fresh food compartment, usually on the upper left wall. Read it to us on the phone and the visit gets shorter.
Refrigerator and Freezer Columns
Separate refrigerator and freezer towers, each with its own cooling system. They also fail separately, so one column being fine says nothing about the other.
Built-In French Door
Two doors above, freezer drawer below. Ice maker faults and drawer frost are the two reasons we are usually called to these.
Built-In Side-by-Side
The 42" and 48" units, panel-ready or stainless. Hinge settle and door alignment come up often here because of the panel weight.

A great deal, and it is the single most useful thing you can notice before calling. Opening the door cuts power to the evaporator fan, so if the sound disappears at that moment the fan is the source rather than the compressor. That is a much smaller repair, and it means we can bring the right part with us instead of diagnosing blind. If the noise continues with the door open, we are looking at the condenser fan or the compressor instead.
On a JennAir it usually is. The dark Obsidian interior is designed around its lighting, so when an LED strip or its driver fails you effectively cannot see inside the unit. Cooling is unaffected, which is why people put it off for months, but it is normally a straightforward part and it is worth combining with any other visit rather than paying a call-out for it twice.
That pattern points at the sensors and the damper that regulate airflow rather than at the cooling system itself. A unit that cannot read its own temperature accurately will overshoot and then overcorrect, so you get cold one week and warm the next. It is worth addressing early, because the compressor is cycling far more often than it was designed to and that shortens its life.
